Schulenberg in the Upper Harz
An active holiday with panoramic views over the famous Oker Reservoir
Schulenberg was built from scratch because, in 1954, Unter- and Mittelschulenberg were relocated to make way for the Okerstausee in order to make way for the planned dam. The residents were relocated 100 metres higher up to the Großer Wiesenberg. The ‘old’ 500-year-old Schulenberg thus gave way to the waters of the Oker, and a ‘new’ Schulenberg emerged, offering a magnificent view of the Oker Dam. Ever since then, a mysterious legend has persisted that the spire of the church in the submerged village of Schulenberg can occasionally be seen in the lake and that the ringing of bells can be heard from time to time.
Today, the reservoir is a popular destination for active holidaymakers who want to take part in sports both on land and in the water. There are no limits to the activities on offer in the water or in the beautiful Harz countryside surrounding the reservoir. On the lake, you can go sailing, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding or canoeing, as well as swimming. The Schulenberg Racepark, featuring downhill, freeride and slopestyle, is a top destination for extreme cyclists. The Skialpinum offers attractive slopes of varying difficulty levels for skiers and snowboarders.
Water sports in Schulenberg – Always active on the water
The Okerstausee, whose picturesque coves nestle against the surrounding mountains, is a popular destination for walkers, skaters and, above all, water sports enthusiasts, particularly in summer. You can go sailing, windsurfing, canoeing or swimming on the lake. Enjoy the clear water and let your gaze wander over the surrounding mountains and green forests.
Activities in Schulenberg – Always active on land
In Schulenberg, you can get active not only in the water but also on land, playing tennis, golf, climbing, hiking or cycling. For hikers, the fitness trail offers exercises such as hill running, rings, pull-ups, push-ups and balancing. The trail starts at the Tannenhöhe car park. You can also play mini-golf; clubs and balls are available free of charge at the BSW Haus Brockenblick (Auf der Höhe 7) and the Sporthotel (Unter den Birken 6).
At the so-called Racepark Schulenberg, a lift takes you and your mountain bike comfortably up to the 645-metre-high Wiesenberg. Here you can choose between various descents: downhill, freeride, bikercross and dirt slopestyle. Schulenberg also offers keen mountain bikers excellent access to the Volksbank-Arena Harz.
You can also enjoy a wonderful winter sports holiday in Schulenberg during the winter. The Ski-Alpinum offers four runs of varying difficulty levels, as well as two lifts and a snowboard fun park. Cross-country skiers will find a well-groomed and extensive network of trails throughout the region.
Schulenberg Stone and Sculpture Trail
Visit the 700-metre-long stone and sculpture trail in Schulenberg. In 2014, a small path featuring several artistically crafted wooden sculptures and rocks typical of the Harz region was created on a section of the fitness trail, the ‘Sonnenbankweg’, above the village of Schulenberg. Whilst taking a closer look at the sculptures, visitors can take a break on the benches, all of which also offer a view of the Brocken. The trail combines the natural beauty of the Harz with an artistic feast for the eyes.
